In traditional methods, Aran patterns were knitted by hand from naturally colored yarns spun from unwashed sheep’s wool. People did not wash the wool before spinning it into yarn. Because they would not wash to protect the natural lanolin feature of the fiber, lanolin would provide waterproofing to the knits.
